Back in 2007, New York City officials set out to find a replacement for their taxi cabs. After 4 years of debate, the roomy and green Nissan NV200 was chosen. The Taxi & Limousine Commission has “re-imagine the entire taxi system” – as hundreds of these vehicles are set to hit the streets by 2013.

Actually, if you live in certain parts of Manhattan or Brooklyn, you’ve already seen the NV200 pick up passengers. Nissan already utilizes their eco-friendly vehicle, Altima Hybrid, as a cab and police cruiser throughout The Big Apple.

“Nissan’s NV200 Taxi will be the first taxi in the world to offer new and iconic features developed for, and with, New Yorkers,” said Joe Castelli, vice president, Nissan Fleet & Commercial Vehicles. “The Taxi of Tomorrow Design Expo will offer a first look at these one-of-a-kind amenities, which include increased legroom, plenty of interior lighting, and materials that reduce odors and germs while supporting sustainability.”

The Nissan NV200 is under contract to be NYC’s official taxi for 10 years.

“The familiar canary yellow exterior and loud horn have made New York taxis as much a part of the Big Apple’s tourist landscape as its iconic skyscrapers. However, visitors to the city will soon notice an altogether sleeker incarnation of the cab on Manhattan’s streets.”

“That’s because Japan’s Nissan Motor Co Ltd won New York City’s 10-year contract to build the next generation of taxis for the city, a deal estimated to be worth more than $1 billion. Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the city’s Taxi and Limousine Commission made the announcement, adding that Nissan’s winning NV 200 minivan will be made in Mexico, then converted into cabs in the U.S.”

The other two finalists for were Turkish manufacturer Karsan Otomotiv and U.S. automaker Ford Motor Co. The ‘Taxi of Tomorrow’ will replace the 16 models now authorized.

The 10-year contract is expected to begin sometime in 2013.

The auto maker calls its NV200 Mobile Office “A Smart Business Tool of New Generation, for Active Professionals.” NV200 combines storage with an office space that has the ability to extract its interior out like a drawer. You can contact clients or get your paperwork done while parked at a lake or beach – then take your scuba gear out for a run during a lunch break.
