A recent report by AutoBlog proves what we notice walking around Center City, Philadelphia every day – Old People LOVE the 2010 Nissan Cube. Other boxy-type rides like Honda’s Element and Scion’s xB have been geared towards a younger audience – but now it seems the older drivers (40+ who make well over $60,000/yr salary) are obsessed with buying these cars.

It’s clear that trend is here to stay. According to USA Today, each automaker that offers a box-it-came-in mobile here in the United States – a list that includes the Honda Element, Kia Soul, Nissan Cube and Scion xB – reports that the average buyer is over the age of 40 and brings home over $60,000 per year.

People all over the Web are checking out the 2009-2010 Nissan Cube – and some love it while others hate with a passion. We checked out both editor and user submitted reviews of the Nissan Cube from our blog, as well as from top automotive resources online (including Kicking Tires, AutoBlog and tech geek haven CNET). Some are impressed, as others are baffled how Nissan ever got away with The Cube.

A quote from CNET’s Review site includes on editor stating:
“”Finally, people hauler thats well built fun and cool.” While a CNET User disagreed: “Bad enough Scion created a lunchbox on wheels, Kia hadta follow the same ‘lunchbox’ with the Soul, and behind its heels, Nissan’s Lunchbox Cube?!?! Talk about being ‘boxed’ in your car…”

Similar vibes can be seen on Kicking Tires’ Blog, where one user said “I wouldn’t mind the rear door since I park mostly in parking lots and very seldom have to parallel park. I found the ride to comfortable and the engine was peppy despite it’s small size. Very roomy inside.” – And another complained Cube’s rear-loading street-side hatch wasn’t properly placed: “how often do you actually load from the sidewalk on that side?!?!? we drive on the RIGHT side of the road… might want to double check which side you drive on ”

Finally, the two top user comments on AutoBlog’s review of Nissan Cube sum it all up:
“i’m glad Nissan brought this over. Another notch in Nissan’s belt.” Vs. “I like “different”, but this is just ugly. Nothing cool about it, IMO–”

The under $14K price tag (starting at $13.9) Nissan Cube is not only the future of design for compact cars, but may also be one of the more manly ones coming out. But how can this be? What else have we got on the market? Pickups? The pickup is on shaky ground. SUV’s? In 5 years you won’t remember what an SUV was – let alone see any on the road. Nope, it’s city cars all the way.

GQ magazine recently pointed out in their review of the Nissan Cube how spacious the vehicle is, for a small car anyway. It can haul “enough laundry detergent to outlast the current recession” from a New Jersey Costco. It also takes on NYC traffic with ease, thanks to its narrow figure. We like how the Cube contains ample storage space to carry your Snap-On tool chest and a case of Vitamin Water (real men drink Vitamin Water – right?) But part of being a 21st century gentleman is having style – and Nissan’s Cube has plenty of it, with its soft angles and curved, wrap around rear windows – one of the vehicle’s most notable design theories.

Like a new aged man the Cube has not only style, it has grace, and it’s also a little weird. The 1.8 liter engine isn’t amazingly over-powered, but you don’t need to prove yourself with machismo in today’s world. You need sensibility with only a hint of danger. And Cube has it. Oh, and you also need a dash of cuteness, and since Nissan modeled the vehicle after a bulldog, we can absolutely see that…

There’s a lot of double entendre we can put into this article, but frankly we don’t want to get blocked by Google search results, so we’ll try to keep it PG….or at least PG-13. It has become apparent Nissan design is leaving those popular curved angles for their trucks and SUVs and heading towards the box look. Yes, a 3D cube design that has already caught much admiration, as well as critics, during auto shows world wide. Like the old saying goes, “it’s hip to be square.”Below we take a look at four of the latest boxy concepts from the Japanese auto maker.

Nissan NV2500 Concept

We first reported on the Nissan Mobile Office Concept last year. Originally the NV200 Mobile Office, a “Smart Business Tool of New Generation, for Active Professionals” Nissan’s NV2500 concept has grown into a real life collapsible roving work station. The van contains enough room for an interior office space, flat screen TV/computer monitors, and a retractable storage space, which can hold anything from extra work gear to hobby equipment. What’s the downside? You’ll never be more than a few feet from your job.

2010 Nissan Cube

Nissan’s Cube is set for a 2010 production line, which means you can expect to see a final version on US and UK Nissan lots sometime in 2009. Aside form being a compact family van with the ability to slip through heavy city traffic due to its narrow, European vehicle design, original dashboard concepts were some of the most futuristic we’ve ever seen. The Cube will be one of Nissan’s hybrid electric vehicles, combining a small gas engine with a rechargeable battery for short range driving.

Nissan Bevel Concept

In 2007 Nissan introduced a space age Bevel Crossover concept, complete with LCD headlights, special hinges to allow easy access to and from the car, and a solar panel roof. A rear compartment can be set up as a pet storage area, giving your pooch decent space to beg, sit and roll over. If you don’t have a pet, well, you can probably lock your kids back there. According to Nissan – “The Nissan Bevel was designed for the ‘everyday hero’, men aged between 45 – 60 with active lifestyles and hobbies, who don’t require a pickup, but storage space which is an extension of their toolboxes, workshops and garages.”

Nissan Terranaut Concept

Another 2007 – 2008 concept, this time Nissan went a little Star Trek with their Terranaut 4×4 concept. The vehicle was apparently designed for “scientists, geologists, archaeologists or adventurers” whose office is the great outdoors. The Terranaut interior supports a “spherical laboratory” with a swivel 360 degrees workstation Those stations leave room for only one passenger-side door, while the driver’s side has two swing-out doors with a lack of b-pillar. Perhaps this concept will make an appearance in the upcoming Jurassic Park sequel.
